Illegal Mining Threatens Baijnath’s Shiva Temple: A breathtaking ancient Shiva temple in Baijnath, Himchal Pradesh is being threatened by more than 25 years of illegal large scale mining in the area. Residents allege that despite orders of the court no efforts have been made to keep mining activities in check. A senior officer said the government was concerned that illegal quarrying and mining had not only caused loss to the temple but also damaged roads and water pipelines. Water levels in the adjacent Binwa river have gone down drastically and as a result have weakened the left side of the temple. The temple currently falls under the purview of the Archaeological Survey of India and is a rare example of Nagara architecture that dates the structure back to the year 1204. The temple is home to a Swayambhu (self-manifest) Shivalinga enshrined by an incredible Shikhara tower. Situated at 4,200 feet in the Dhauladhar range of the western Himalayas, inscriptions around the temple indicate that long before the current structure, a Shiva temple was worshipped in this very place. The spectacular temple is also home to a rare standing Nandi and some scholars note the temple may have been reconstructed as many as 7 times. Veerabhadreshwara Temple in Mysuru Demolished: A protest was staged last week condemning demolition of a Veerabhadreshwara Temple in Mysore. The temple was razed around 4:30 am on a Saturday morning. Both government and local organization members claim the temple was demolished without properly informing the public. The protesters questioned why the temple was demolished under the cover of darkness. They urged authorities to promptly reconstruct the temple.
