“Eyes Wide Shut” – Behind Forced Conversions in India

A 2009 film by Pia Skov entitled, “Bad Manna – An eye-opening on-the-spot report on Christian missionary conversions in India” sheds light on the dangerous forced conversions destroying innocent Hindu communities across India. Largely filmed in the Songadh and Dang areas of southern Gujarat the film documents the experiences of real villagers duped into accepting money and false promises in exchange for turning their backs on their Hindu families. One man tells the reason he converted is because the Church gave him Rs.4000 for his farming. He says he was told he would be trained to become a priest but “was only trained to convert people to Christianity and was told negative things about Hinduism”. They were told Hindu “mantras bring out the Devil in people.” Another man says, “we have been taught since childhood that Hindus are evil people possessed by Devils and Demons…we were not allowed to enter their homes or eat their food in case the evil entered into us…I used to be very afraid of the Hindus.” The filmmaker shares her sentiment of the Missionary Militants as, “A type of mafia extorting money and using violence against villagers to further their own ends.” A young girl raised in a Missionary School shared, “We were not allowed to learn the traditional Indian language and were stopped from singing the national anthem…I believe that the Christians are here in India because they want to destroy the whole Hindu culture and religion.” A doctor from Asharam Hospital in Dang said he sees many patients come to him after they have been sick for a very long time. They avoid going to the hospital immediately after falling ill because they are told the Church will heal them. Only after this fails, they finally go to the hospitals. The film goes on to say, “It is of common knowledge that the Churches buy conversions at $12 a head…Many of the benefits are provided only in the beginning to lure the villagers to convert…After conversion people are told to keep away from Hindus, even away from the family members who have not yet been converted. The Missionaries made the converts believe that even talking to a Hindu makes him or her possessed by Devils.” This all begs the question: “How do the Missionary Militants know so much about Devil worship?” Another man shares, “3 Priests in long white robes were ordering these people to step on pictures of different Hindu gods which they had placed on the steps of the Church…they were also ordered to burn pictures of our Hindu gods…poor people choose to become Christians because the Church promises them advantages, things that would take the Indian government a long time to deliver. And they promise them healing from all diseases just by coming to the Sunday prayers in the Church.” A couple shares of their conversion experience, “We got converted to Christianity because our son was very sick. We were promised that he would be healed in the Church. After 7 years our son was still very sick so we decided to re-convert back to Hinduism. Now our son is not sick anymore…We were told we could eat meat from cows and pigs but we never started to do that. Since we became Hindus again we’re not welcome by Christian people.” Another man tells, “In my district, 95% of the population is Christian now…Many times I have attended big Christian Church gatherings with 15-20,000 people…they only use people who are instructed to act sick and then pretend to be healed…[they created] anti-Hindu and anti-national feelings and they are changing the Hindu culture.” The film segment ends, “I saw people with a rich cultural history dating back more than 5000 years being destroyed.” (25 June 2020) ————————————— Visit us around the web: Facebook: facebook.com/HNGlobalPress Youtube: youtube.com/HinduismNow Twitter: https://twitter.com/HN_Global_Press Instagram: instagram.com/KailasaHinduismNow/ ————————————— #HinduismNow #Kailasa #Nithyananda
